Can one really put a price on the thrill of raising racehorses? Seeing a horse born on your own farm run in the Kentucky Derby or Breeders’ Cup? Actually, one can, and that price is $100 million.
Located in northern Westchester County, just an hour from New York City, 740-acre Stonewall Farm is the largest parcel of land in the county, which may account for its whopping $628,000 of annual taxes (though $415,000 with agricultural exemptions). The farm is currently owned by Barry K. Schwartz, co-founder of the Calvin Klein global fashion empire, and his wife Sheryl. A friend of Klein’s since childhood, Schwartz lent him $10,000 in 1968 to create samples for his first fashion line. After that, Schwartz was the CEO of the company, while Klein remained the creative visionary.
The Schwartzes replaced the original farmhouse on the property with a 24,000 square foot mansion in 2004. The house overlooks the sprawling grounds, which includes a spring-fed pond, horse paddocks, and formal French and Japanese gardens designed by landscape architect Edmund D. Hollander.
Highlights of the eight-bedroom, eight-and-a-half-bath house include extra-wide planked pine floors, a two-story library with spiral staircase, a second-floor sitting room with double-height ceiling, and a sunroom.
